Background Information

Who We are

Cashew Watch Ghana (CWG) is a platform of Civil Society made up of cashew farmers, media practitioners and NGOs and was formed in January 2019 by Global Media Foundation. The rationale behind the formation of the platform was to bring together advocates in the cashew sector to advocate and promote the livelihood of cashew farmers especially cashew women farmers in Ghana.

The platform works in synergy to advocate, sensitize and respond to needs that hinder cashew development. This is achieved through the provision of advocacy and sensitisation initiatives to influence government decisions and policy initiatives on cashew in Ghana. The CWG exist to mobilize and empower Civil Society especially cashew farmers to push state-actors to take meaningful actions that contribute to creating and promoting a vibrant cashew sector through advocacy, transparency and accountability.

The cashew value chain offers a significant potential for employment and wealth creation, therefore, the adoption of a value chain approach to promote all the actors along the cashew value chain is key to a sustainable development of the cashew sector in Ghana. Local smallholder farmers therefore play an important role in feeding local populations. What is worrying is the extent to which smallholder and local cashew farming has become increasingly ‘un-competitive’. This is because they have limited access to technology and poor infrastructure, among other social, economic and political factors.
